The SSI Enriched Air Nitrox program will teach you how to safely plan and dive with enriched air mixtures of up to 40% oxygen. Diving with enriched air can increase your no-decompression limits, increase your safety, and reduce the required length of your surface intervals compared to air. You will earn the SSI Enriched Air Nitrox 32% or 40% certification after completing this program.
Why dive Enriched Air/Nitrox?
By adding more oxygen to your scuba cylinder, the O2 percentage in your scuba tank will rise. Any tank that contains more than 21% O2 is considered Enriched air/Nitrox. Many people think that it is the higher % of O2 that makes the difference. But that is actually not true. It’s in fact the lower Nitrogen % that helps you. Our bottom times are limited because of our bodies absorbing Nitrogen. The deeper you dive, the more Nitrogen you absorb, the shorter you get to dive. When we raise the O2% in your tank, it will lower the nitrogen% thus raising your bottom times. On the other hand, diving on enriched air also brings other risks. That is why it is important to follow the SSI Enriched Air Nitrox course.
